What is MCT Oil ?
MCT oil is a supplement made from medium-length chains of fats called triglycerides. MCTs are easier to digest than longer-chain fatty acids found in many other foods, and they are quickly absorbed and used by the body for energy.
I use MCT oil derived from coconut oil as it contains high concentrations of medium-chain fatty acids.
Because MCTs are more rapidly broken down and absorbed than long-chain fatty acids, they are commonly used in health and fitness to boost energy, support weight loss, and enhance cognitive function. People on ketogenic diets often use MCT oil to help maintain ketosis.
It can be added to smoothies, coffee, or used in cooking at lower temperatures.
A teaspoon to 1-2 tablespoons a day is also great when you're fasting and you need some extra energy. MCT oil can offer several benefits during menopause - I've listed below some reasons why you should consider including it in your daily schedule:
Energy Boost: During menopause, many women experience fatigue and low energy levels. MCT oil is quickly converted into energy, providing a fast and efficient energy source that can help combat fatigue and enhance overall vitality.
Weight Management: Hormonal changes during menopause often lead to weight gain, particularly around the abdomen. MCT oil can promote weight loss by increasing satiety, boosting metabolism, and enhancing fat oxidation. It can help control appetite and reduce calorie intake.
Cognitive Function: Menopause can affect cognitive function, leading to issues like brain fog and memory lapses. MCTs can cross the blood-brain barrier and provide an alternative energy source for the brain, potentially improving mental clarity, focus, and cognitive performance.
Hormonal Balance: MCT oil can support hormonal balance by providing essential fatty acids necessary for hormone production. Balanced hormones can help mitigate some menopausal symptoms such as mood swings, hot flashes, and sleep disturbances.
Bone Health: Osteoporosis and decreased bone density are common concerns during menopause due to the drop in estrogen levels. While MCT oil itself doesn't directly improve bone density, maintaining a healthy weight and reducing inflammation through a balanced diet (including MCT oil) can contribute to better bone health.
Mood Regulation: Mood swings, anxiety, and depression are common during menopause. MCT oil can provide a steady source of energy for the brain, which might help stabilize mood and reduce the severity of these symptoms.
Metabolic Health: Menopause often brings about changes in metabolism, increasing the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. MCT can help regulate blood sugar levels by promoting the release of hormones that aid in blood sugar control, potentially reducing the risk of metabolic disorders.
Heart Health: Cardiovascular health becomes increasingly important during menopause, as the risk of heart disease rises. MCT oil can help improve lipid profiles by increasing HDL (good) cholesterol and reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol, contributing to better heart health.
Anti-inflammatory Properties: MCT oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce chronic inflammation, which is linked to many menopausal symptoms and conditions, including joint pain and cardiovascular disease.
If you're going to start using MCT oil, make sure you start with just a teaspoon a day, working your way up to 1-2 tablespoons a day. Consuming too much of it may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. And no-one wants that !
Enjoy your journey x
