Why a No Sugar Life is a Bloody Good Life




Adopting a no-sugar or low-sugar lifestyle offers a raft of health benefits. Eliminating refined sugar from your diet altogether can lead to improvements in physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. I adopted this life change a couple of years ago and I'm always banging on about it to anyone who'll listen - here are some of the reasons why:


Weight Management

  • Reduced Caloric Intake: Surely - that says it all ! YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT. That is the start and the finish of it. Enough said.

  • Sugary foods and drinks are often high in calories with little nutritional value. Cutting out sugar will help reduce overall caloric intake, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight.

  • Decreased Cravings: Reducing sugar intake can help stabilise blood sugar levels, leading to fewer cravings for sugary and high-calorie foods.


Improved Metabolic Health

  • Better Blood Sugar Control: Eliminating sugar can help prevent spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. THIS is important. Elliminating the crashes also helps control energy levels. Who doesn't want that ?

  • Lower Risk of Metabolic Syndrome: Reducing sugar intake can help lower the risk of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels.


Heart Health

  • Reduced Risk of Heart Disease: High sugar intake is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Reducing sugar can lower triglyceride levels, decrease inflammation, and improve overall cardiovascular health. Inflammation causes sore, stiff joints and pain. Take away the sugar - the pain reduces enormously (side note: you may start bouncing out of bed in the mornings).


Dental Health

  • Prevention of Tooth Decay: Sugary foods and drinks contribute to tooth decay and cavities. A no-sugar diet can significantly improve dental health and reduce the need for dental treatments.

  • The raft of hormonal changes that take place during menopause make the teeth and gums more susceptible to plaque. Remember when we were pregnant and all the old people told us we'd probably lose a tooth ? Yeah... that may fly when we're younger, but losing teeth in your fifties isn't as cute.


Mental and Emotional Well-being

  • Improved Mood Stability: High sugar consumption can lead to mood swings and increased anxiety. Reducing sugar can lead to more stable moods and improved mental clarity. BASICALLY - reducing sugar will stop us melting down and freaking out. It's proven. Mental clarity is KEY to surviving peri and menopause. You cannot have considered thought when you're eating refined sugar !

  • Better Cognitive Function: High sugar intake can impair cognitive function and memory. A no-sugar diet will support better brain health.


Energy Levels

  • Consistent Energy: Cutting out sugar will prevent the energy crashes that often follow sugar consumption, leading to more consistent and sustained energy levels throughout the day. WHO DOESN'T WANT THAT? No more 3pm crashes, no more dragging yourself through the day. Energy levels go through the roof once you eliminate sugar. Trust me, it works.


Skin Health

  • Reduced Acne and Skin Aging: High sugar intake can contribute to acne and accelerate skin aging. A low-sugar diet can help maintain clearer skin and reduce signs of aging.

  • Remember the teenage acne ? No one wants that at 50 . Sugar affects hormonal health, which in turn affects our skin. It is what it is. Get rid of it. You will look and feel amazing.


Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases

  • Lower Risk of Certain Cancers: Some research suggests that high sugar intake may be linked to an increased risk of certain cancers. Reducing sugar consumption can be part of a preventive health strategy.

  • Inflammation Reduction: Sugar is known to promote inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is linked to numerous health conditions, including arthritis, heart disease, and cancer. Reducing sugar intake will help decrease inflammation.


My Practical Tips for Reducing Sugar Intake

Read Labels: Be aware of hidden sugars in processed foods. Look for ingredients like fructose, corn syrup, sucrose, glucose, and maltose. They're all just another name for sugar.


Choose Whole Foods: Opt for whole, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.


Sweeten Naturally: Use natural sweeteners like stevia or monk fruit in place of sugar. I use monk fruit over Stevia. It's my preference, however Monk Fruit is expensive. But you only need to use a little - it goes a long way. Troy isn't a fan of monk fruit, however the other option he has open to him is... nothing. So - monk fruit it is lol !


Cook at Home: Preparing meals at home allows you to control the ingredients and reduce added sugars. STOP BUYING TAKEAWAYS ! it's full of hidden salt and sugars. Once in a while is no issue, but if you've got a penchant for takeout, stop it. It's making you fat. And sick.


Stay Hydrated: Drink water or herbal teas or black coffee. Or whatever the opposite of soft drink is (including diet sodas). It's full of crap and it's making you unhealthy and overweight.


A no-sugar lifestyle is challenging initially - it's not bloody easy. But the health benefits make it a worthwhile endeavor. Choose YOU first, make mindful food choices and seek out sugar alternatives that work for you. You will only benefit positively from it.


And you'll look friggin amazing !
